cheapest ways to send money home from the gulf in 2025

7 min read · last updated may 2026 · related tool: remittance comparison

Over 35 million migrant workers live in the GCC countries. Most of them send money home regularly — to families in India, Pakistan, the Philippines, Bangladesh, Egypt, and dozens of other countries. The remittance industry in the Gulf moves hundreds of billions of dollars every year, and the difference between a good provider and a bad one can cost a worker several hundred dollars annually in hidden fees.

This guide compares the major remittance providers operating in the Gulf and explains what to look for beyond the headline exchange rate.

the two costs you're actually paying

Every remittance has two costs, and providers are clever about hiding one while advertising the other:

Always calculate the total cost: fee + spread. A "zero fee" provider with a 2% spread is more expensive than a 15 AED fee provider with a 0.5% spread.

the major providers compared

Al Ansari Exchange — the largest exchange house in the UAE with over 230 branches. Convenient for cash-to-cash transfers, especially for workers who receive wages in cash. Rates are competitive for popular corridors (UAE→India, UAE→Philippines) but less so for smaller destinations. Walk-in only for most services; their app has improved but still trails digital-first competitors.

Lulu Exchange — strong presence across the GCC, particularly in the UAE and Oman. Known for aggressive promotional rates on specific corridors, especially UAE→India and UAE→Philippines during peak seasons. Worth checking their weekly promotions before sending.

Wise (formerly TransferWise) — the digital disruptor. Uses the real mid-market rate and charges a transparent, low percentage fee (typically 0.4–0.7% depending on the corridor). No branches — everything is online or via app. Best for bank-to-bank transfers. Not ideal if you're paying in cash or the recipient doesn't have a bank account.

Remitly — digital-first, strong on the UAE→Philippines and UAE→India corridors. Often runs "first transfer free" promotions. Competitive rates, fast delivery (often same-day for popular corridors). Good app experience.

Western Union — the legacy player. Available everywhere, which is its main advantage for countries where other providers don't have payout networks. But consistently among the most expensive options for popular corridors. Use as a last resort when the recipient's location limits your choices.

corridor-specific tips

Gulf → India (INR): The most competitive corridor in the world. Dozens of providers fight for this market. Wise and Remitly typically offer the best rates. Al Ansari and Lulu are competitive for cash transactions. Check the rate at multiple providers before sending — even small differences on the INR rate add up over a year of monthly remittances.

Gulf → Philippines (PHP): Also highly competitive. Remitly often has promotional rates here. InstaPay and GCash have made digital delivery much faster — money arrives in seconds if the recipient uses these apps.

Gulf → Pakistan (PKR): More complex due to Pakistan's dual exchange rate history. Rates have stabilized since the IMF program, but still check whether the provider uses the interbank rate or a less favorable reference. JazzCash and EasyPaisa on the receiving end make delivery instant.

Gulf → Egypt (EGP): Since the 2022–2023 devaluations, the EGP rate has been volatile. Providers sometimes lag behind rate movements — if the pound just weakened, digital providers like Wise update faster than exchange houses.

timing your transfers

Exchange rates move throughout the day. For large transfers, it's worth checking the rate at different times. Mid-week (Tuesday–Thursday) often has slightly better rates than weekends, though the difference is small. What matters more is avoiding transfers immediately after a major rate movement — providers widen their spreads during volatility.
